Arkansas BRIN Biomedical Research Symposium
2004 Symposium dates set
Faculty and Students, please make plans to attend this year's Research Symposium sponsored by the Arkansas Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (AR BRIN) on the afternoon of Friday, October 8, 2004 at The Peabody Hotel in Little Rock beginning at 1:30pm (registration and poster setup begins at Noon). This year, the Research Symposium is sponsored by the AR BRIN Bioinformatics Core and we are especially encouraging those who have an interest in biomedical sciences and/or bioinformatics — whether your background is in the life sciences, computer and information science, and/or mathematics and statistics — to attend.
Keynote Speaker
The Research Symposium will feature Dr. Alan Leshner, Chief Executive Officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Executive Publisher of Science, as the keynote speaker.
Poster Presentations
Please submit a poster describing your research to be included in the late afternoon poster session; any topic related to biomedical research, including the related areas of computational biology, bioinformatics, computational strategies, statistical analysis and mathematical modeling are encouraged. No abstract is required, but we do need to know the title and the authors and their home institutions. Awards will be given for the top posters.
Come Early
Some of you may be interested in attending the Second Annual Conference of the MidSouth Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Society on Thursday and Friday, also at The Peabody Hotel (register at mcbios.org). If you don't want to come for the whole conference, you are still invited to attend the closing session at 10:30am with no charge (though seating is limited). Dr. Michael Gribskov, President of the International Society for Computational Biology, will give the Friday morning keynote talk.
Stay Late
Saturday morning will feature a free tutorial on the S+ statistical data analysis/data mining software package by Insightful Corporation. This software, and the ArrayAnalyzer add-on package for analysis of microarray data, is supported by the Bioinformatics Core as part of the Bioinformatics Computing Facility of the MidSouth Bioinformatics Center. Registration is required and space is limited (first-come/first-served!).
Substantial Travel and Lodging Subsidies Available*
Friday night's lodging will be provided at The Peabody Hotel in Little Rock on a first-come/first-served basis for those registered Arkansas participants traveling more than 50 miles one-way to attend. Travel will be reimbursed at 31 cents per mile per car with a minimum of two registered occupants for those traveling more than 25 miles to attend. An afternoon refreshment break and dinner is included for all registered attendees. Dr. Karen Wheeler, Associate Director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education will be the dinner keynote speaker.

* All travel reimbursements subject to availability of funds and subject to travel restrictions and guidelines.
