| About the first annual summit |
This is a new, proposed research area in which we are soliciting participation from interested researchers throughout the state and region. Building upon our strengths in bioinformatics, nanotechnology, the life sciences and toxicology, we hope this new opportunity is one in which we can build a strong international reputation.
During the short term, we will be focused on a collaboration between UALR, UAF, ASU, NCTR and some of the state's undergraduate institutions in preparing a "white paper" by Oct. 1st for consideration to be included in the 2006 Arkansas NSF EPSCoR proposal. However, this effort is oriented on the long term and we will be considering future funding opportunities from NIH, DOE, DOD, NSF, EPA, etc. This is a good opportunity to get in on the initial efforts to pull this together!
Specifically, we will be pooling our talents, abilities, and resources to investigate the toxicology of nanoparticles in the environment. Initially this will involve developing models and testing procedures to understand basic mechanisms; ultimately it might evolve into developing toxicological abatement strategies and other approaches to reduce the impact of these particles in the environment thereby enabling their widespread and appropriate use.
