An emerging part of our research focus is elucidation of genes involved in teratogenic events caused by biotin deficiency. We plan to screen expression of multiple genes using commercially available gene expression chips and thereby generate data suitable for analysis by advanced bioinformatics approaches. This research would be a PhD research project. Moreover, Dr. Mock’s background in physics, chemistry, and mathematics as an undergraduate, nuclear physics as a graduate student, and physical biochemistry as a graduate student combined with extensive experience as a pediatrician and pediatric gastroenterologist makes him particularly well qualified to mentor a student in a multi-disciplinary program. As the only UAMS recipient of an NIH Merit Award, this mechanism of funding should provide important stability in laboratory environment for a bioinformatics student.
