Our studies focus on interactions between neurons and glia in the brain. The role of neuroprotective and neurotoxic molecules secreted by microglia and astrocytes in neuronal proliferation, survival and function is being defined. Mechanisms that control these interactions including cell-surface receptors, intracellular signal transduction pathways, and gene and protein expression are being identified. This laboratory has discovered that ethanol exposure during brain development disrupts specific interactions between microglia and neurons. Mechanistic analyses of the molecular targets of ethanol in the developing brain have led to new strategies for pharmacological intervention in the neuropathology of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder.
