Molecular Systematics and Evolution, Ecology, and Biostatistics. My research uses some of the same molecular forensic techniques used to solve crimes and to map the human genome to investigate the evolutionary history of a wide variety of organisms. Questions include: What is the nature of genetic differentiation among the various taxa? How do levels of genetic differentiation compare with morphological, ecological, and behavioral differences among species? Are the patterns of genetic variation and estimates of time since divergence among lineages consistent with Cenozoic events? My research provides important insight and gives perspective to a broad spectrum of issues dealing with the evolutionary history of each species by establishing the degree of relatedness among the various species and by testing for "congruence" with independent data sets (e.g., molecular vs. morphologic). In a broader context, these data add to the ever-growing body of knowledge of molecular genetics and evolution. Research performed under my direction and in conjunction with colleagues is central to deciphering the Tree of Life.
