Academic interests include biochemistry, cell and molecular, and membrane biology. Research goals are directed towards understanding receptor mediated signal transduction and intracellular signaling mechanisms in relation to environmental changes or in disease states. Cells communicate with their surrounding environment through sensory molecules, the receptors, located on the cell surface. Specific interaction between biologically active molecule and the receptor initiates a cascade of cellular events that translates the external information into the internal language of the cell in the form of second messengers that bring about physiological changes. My current research is aimed at understanding the role of G-proteins and their receptors, second messengers such as inositol polyphosphates, cyclic nucleotides (cAMP, cGMP), protein kinases and phosphatases in regulation of cellular processes. Major emphasis is placed on subcellular compartmentalization, vesicular membrane and protein trafficking, protein-protein interactions, cellular regulation of apoptosis, endo- and exocytosis, and maintenance of cell polarity in epithelial cells. A recent project involves analyses of cellular signaling network and genetic expression profiles using microarray and proteomics in response to simulated microgravity. Biomedical engineering interests include development and characterization of biocompatible biomaterials for medical implants and computational modeling of carcinogenesis.
